Light Illuminator
Light Illuminator

When is it necessary to use face detection? Or should it be used at all?
I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-W80. When I use the face detection feature, the AF illuminator (which emits the red light to focus better) is disabled. I've noticed that if I use the face detection and take a picture, then take the same pitcure with the face detection off and use the illuminator, the picture is brighter. When I use the face detection the face is very clear and the background is darkened. Is the the purpose of the feature? If there is not face to detect I'd like my pictures to be brighter. Should I just turn it on only when I need it? The auto setting works very well and that is the only issue I am having with it. When I want to take a picture of something that is not a person looking into the camera, if it is dark then it will not be able to focus properly.
Anyhow any insight or tips? Thanks in advance.
I've had a couple of cameras with face detection and I just turned it off. It takes a little more time for the camera to identify a face and sometimes there is not enough contrast for it to do this anyhow.
If you learn how to do the "half-pressed" position on the shutter release - and you must do this with point and shoot cameras - just "detect" faces by yourself. Put the focus frame over the face that you want to have properly exposed and in focus, press the shutter half-way, and then recompose the shot the way you want it and finish pressing the shutter release. Once you get the idea of doing this, there will be no more odd exposures and it will be just as fast as or faster than letting the camera do it for you.
